This poem was first published in January of 2011, but it didn’t get a single “like”. Come on, critics, have a look! If you can do better, we’d love to feature your sweet rhymes right here 😉
Spirit River’s “Not Gots”
Some places are lovely for what they have got
While others are better for what they have not
Take us way up here in the North of Alberta
Spirit River’s “not gots” aren’t liable to hurt ya.
We’ve not got ice storms nor cyclones or floods
Forest fires or movements of boulders and mud
Spirit River is free of freak heat waves and war
Of earthquakes and tornadoes ranked F4 or more
We have no Walmart warehouses, traffic jams, or gangs
No giant beetles, malaria, or reptiles with fangs
Hurricanes, volcanoes, and crocodiles aren’t here
Even of poison ivy we need have no fear
So though snow might convince you to flee somewhere “nice”
Stop and reflect while you’re chipping that ice
Some places’ “not gots” are good, it is true
But our “not gots” here make it the right place for you.
