Blue Green Algae in the Peace Country

A health advisory is out: there is blue green algae in our local lakes.  Even if you don’t see the actual bloom, the toxin is in the water.  Time to be extra careful with children, pets and livestock.

  1. So you’ve had warm weather! And I see that Moonshine Lake is once again named. I remember the water having a rusty colour but don’t know what that was from. Iron content? Or a red algae? Anyway, maybe this blue-green algae will change the colour of the water (temporarily).

Curious that it should have been red. These days it is generally green by the end of summer – green with duckweed. We’ve had a few hot days, but apparently enough to grow the algae. Or perhaps once it has a good year it comes back more easily the next?

      • It could be that I’m thinking of One Island Lake. One of the two lakes made my legs look like blood when I waded in. I may have my lakes confused. It’s been a long time ago.
