Buteo lagopus (scientific name) – Rough-Legged Hawk
A member of the Buteo group of hawks – large (17-24″), thick set hawks with broad wings and wide rounded tails.
Specifically for this hawk – 21-22″, streaked breast with darker belly band & feathering extending down legs. Not visible in this photo – tail, white with broad black band or bands towards the tip & a white flash on the wings.
Generally seen in the Spirit River area only in spring & fall on migration. Rough-legs winter to the south of us & breed / nest to the north in the Arctic.
First personal sighting this year April 2.

You can view many more images of this hawk by searching Google (Images), Flickr or Bing. Search the scientific name ‘Buteo lagopus’ for the most accurate results. This image search method is good for helping identify any bird you might not be sure about.

Excellent information! Thank you. What a beautiful hawk. Keep an eye out for them if you happen to be on the old highway just north of the Spirit River – Rycroft highway. There have been quite a few there this last week.
